The Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) Program at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) offers international learners the opportunity to develop their Indonesian language skills while exploring Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. Our programs are designed to accommodate different learning goals, schedules, and interests, whether you are learning Indonesian for academic purposes, professional development, daily communication, or cultural exploration.


Through engaging language instruction and cultural activities, BIPA UNESA provides a learning experience that connects classroom learning with real-life communication and Indonesian culture. We offer several program options to meet the diverse needs of international students, professionals, and groups.


Our Programs

1. Regular Program

The Regular Program is designed for international learners who wish to study Indonesian systematically and comprehensively. Available in both online and offline formats, the program covers essential language skills, including writing, speaking, listening, reading, grammar, and an introduction to Indonesian culture.


Students also have the opportunity to participate in practical cultural classes, such as Karawitan, Batik Making, and Traditional Dance, depending on the semester.

  • Duration: 16 weeks per semester
  • Total Sessions: 112 sessions, with 100 minutes per session
  • Class Schedule: Monday to Thursday
  • Semester 1: August–December
  • Semester 2: February–May
  • Tuition Fee: USD 700 per semester


This program is suitable for learners seeking structured Indonesian language instruction alongside cultural learning.


2. Private Program

The Private Program offers personalized Indonesian language instruction for individuals and small groups. Designed for both professional and academic purposes, this program provides a flexible learning experience tailored to participants’ specific goals, proficiency levels, and scheduling preferences.


The curriculum covers writing, speaking, listening, reading, grammar, and an introduction to Indonesian culture. A Business Track is also available for professionals who plan to work in Indonesia.

  • Duration: 14 weeks
  • Total Sessions: 56 sessions, with 100 minutes per session
  • Schedule: Flexible and customizable
  • Format: Online or offline
  • Tuition Fee: Varies according to the number of participants

Whether you want to improve your everyday communication, prepare for academic activities, or develop your Indonesian language skills for the workplace, the Private Program offers a more personalized approach to learning.


3. Short Course / Summer Class
The Short Course / Summer Class is an intensive program designed for international learners who want to experience Indonesian language and culture within a shorter period. It is ideal for summer visits, short-term academic exchanges, cultural programs, and group learning activities.

In addition to classroom instruction, participants can join cultural experiences and activities that introduce them to Indonesian traditions and everyday life.
  • Program Options: 1 month (20 sessions) or 2 months (40 sessions)
  • Schedule: Flexible and customizable
  • Core Subjects: Writing, speaking, listening, reading, grammar, and an introduction to Indonesian culture
  • Additional Classes: Gamelan, Traditional Dance, and Batik Making
  • Cultural Activities: Surabaya City Tour, cultural visits, and the “Indonesia” Cultural Event

This program combines language learning with cultural immersion, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of Indonesia through interactive lessons and meaningful experiences.


4. Weekend Short Course (Private)
The Weekend Short Course is a flexible private program for individuals and small groups who prefer to study Indonesian on weekends. It is designed for learners who have weekday commitments but still want to improve their Indonesian language skills for personal, professional, or academic purposes.

The program can be customized according to participants’ needs, with a focus on daily conversation, business communication, or academic Indonesian.
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Total Sessions: 16 sessions, with 100 minutes per session
  • Schedule: Every Saturday and Sunday
  • Format: Online or offline
  • Subjects: Writing, reading, listening, speaking, grammar, and an introduction to Indonesian culture

With a flexible schedule and tailored learning focus, this program provides a convenient way to learn Indonesian while balancing other responsibilities.
